Egg Retrieval Day
The day has finally come! We arrive at the hospital at 7:30 AM ready to retrieve some eggs! I was instructed that I’d be completely sedated but only for about 30 minutes or so. The procedure it’s self didn’t take very long but I was knocked out cold, it felt like hours.
As I was barely opening my eyes, the nurse told me “We retrieved 39 eggs”. Say what?! 39?! I didn’t even know that was possible. I thought I’d have 15 at the max. Guess you can call me an egg making machine “toot, toot”.
I was a little sore afterwards. They instructed me to just go home and lay down. I thought I’d be just fine to go back to work the next day. Absolutely not! I was sore and walking like a snail for the next 3 to 4 days. I was so thirsty and felt like I just needed to release a whole lot of gas. I’d heard from a couple of my IVF sisters to be sure to stay hydrated so I drank so much Gatorade, I could have probably swam in it. My biggest fear was being hospitalized for ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome (OHSS). I did not want that!
After about a week, I feel normal again. I do not want to see another bottle of Gatorade in my life! I tried pure coconut water but it was not tasty. All 39 eggs matured, 27 were fertilized, 9 made it to day 3, 7 made it to day 5. Those 7 were frozen and biopsied for PGS testing which 5 came back genetically normal.
We have 5 ladies and gentlemen 5 little embryos sitting on ice waiting to be reunited with mommy and daddy.
Now we wait to find out when’s transfer day!!
